Election results 2024: What changes can employers expect?
Asylum
Labour have been clear that they will not be continuing with the Rwanda policy and instead redirect the funds into the asylum backlog. Instead they will be focusing on targeting the criminal gangs driving the crisis.
Labour pledges to “stop the chaos” of the “small boat crisis” by going after criminal gangs, and create a new Border Security Command with hundreds of new investigators, intelligence officers, and cross-border police officers.
It has stated it will seek a new security agreement with the EU, hire additional caseworkers to clear the backlog of asylum claims in the UK, and end asylum hotels. Through negotiations, it aims to set up a new returns and enforcement unit to fast-track removals to safe countries for people who do not have the right to stay in the UK.
Given the party’s position on Brexit, it will be interesting to see the scope of negotiations and deals offered by neighboring EU countries as well as other safe countries.
